Linky and Pam smell trouble before KubeCon Salt Lake City

Amsterdam wasn't supposed to happen twice
Last KubeCon, Phippy made it out of the canals of Amsterdam shaken but alive and well. That should have been the end of it, but the Unknown Controller is back to try again. This time, though, Linky and Pam are ready: by tracing the quiet reconnaissance mapping Phippy's schedule, they have successfully triangulated a signal signature to where the Unknown Controller is working, out beneath the salt flats west of Salt Lake City.
Using Linkerd to track the metadata and Teleport to identify the unauthorized access points, they've identified the lair. But they can't leave their posts at HQ – so Argi, Tai, Kuack, and Ky volunteer to be their eyes on the ground, trekking into the desert to investigate the Controller's base and end this threat before KubeCon opens.
A ruse in the shimmering heat
When the team arrives at the coordinates, though, there’s no command center there. Instead, they find a hollow shell of a base – it’s a ruse designed to lead them away from the city. The Unknown Controller is elsewhere, and their mission is far more dangerous than they’d anticipated.
Looking around, though, they find just enough information to think they know where to go, and just enough water for Argi, Tai, Kuack, and Ky to fill their canteens one last time. Beyond the waystation lies miles of brutal, alkaline desert. They head out, trusting on Linky and Pam to guide them through the technical storms awaiting them in blinding white flats, but if they don't find the Unknown Controller or another source of water soon, dehydration will claim them before they can save anyone.

The unknown plan: A call for detectives
The mascots are moving toward a confrontation they don't fully understand. The Unknown Controller's ultimate plan is still obscured by the desert haze, but one thing is clear. The threat to Phippy at KubeCon SLC is real, and the mascots are running out of time and water. He's already made his threat plain. If the cluster detectives don't show up, he'll dry a mascot down to salt. We need cluster detectives to join Linky and Pam in the fight. This isn't just a game: you'll be working with real workloads running in a real cluster, and you'll need to solve real problems to advance. Some will be simple, some will not, but no matter what, Linky and Pam don't have enough hands to close every gap and stop the Unknown Controller in time.
Linky and Pam need you at the party
That's the job. Register at savephippy.com, solve one challenge ahead of time for a code word, and show up ready to help Linky and Pam. Every room your team solves is one less opening for the Unknown Controller to use – and Argi, Tai, Kuack, and Ky are alone in the desert with no hope of making it back without your help.
Save Phippy returns to KubeCon SLC on Wednesday, November 11, 2026, at Edison House, hosted by Buoyant and Teleport. Bring a team and a laptop. Linky and Pam already know this isn't over.
